Through everyday occurrences the Milani team has had the honor to meet some very inspiring people. One of these inspiring people is makeup artist Annah and we would like to share her story.
She has been a makeup artist for 10 years and has worked on editorials, films, shows, and music videos. What makes her truly inspiring is that she uses her skills as a makeup artist to help improve the lives of others. She volunteers in the jungles of Peru to teach the woman in the community of Yantaló about beauty, grooming and hygiene.
In September of 2010 she journeyed to the Amazon jungle of Peru for the very first time. With only a bag of essentials she tried to teach the women of Yantaló about the tools of her trade. Conditions were rough; electricity and [cold] water were sparse. Hygiene was also not a priority; chickens, cows, dogs, and cats ran wild along with barefooted children still covered in their previous meal.
With basic lessons and demonstrations she taught them about makeup application, manicures/pedicures and hair styling. Her main focus was on hygiene and proper application.
In a dusty living room of a local home, women gathered around Annah for their turn at humble pampering – something they have never experienced. Even with a language barrier, she was able to communicate with them through smiles and laughter.
After hearing Annah’s remarkable story, the Milani team was inspired to help Annah on her second journey to Peru in September of 2011. Armed with over 100 pounds of makeup, nail and hair products the second time around she meant business.
As a favor to us she created and edited a video to highlighting her trip. Please watch the video below and become as inspired as we were.
Annah’s next goal is to establish a foundation/charity in order to sustain the BelleFace Women’s Community Center of Yantaló. This will provide a space for the women to utilize as a learning facility, salon, socializing area and storefront amongst other programs intended for the Empowerment Through Beauty campaign.
If you would like to contact Annah directly about the foundation please email: Annah@yantalo.org.
